Press Release

Solo exhibition Li Hui in Light Art Museum, Eindhoven, The Netherlands

Who’s Afraid of Red, Amber and Green?

One of the new generation of Chinese artists is Li Hui (Beijing, 1977) who is experimenting with all imaginable forms and technologies, among them LASER and LED light. From July 17th onwards the Light Art Museum in Eindhoven will host the first large scale solo-exhibition in Europe with four major and monumental works.

Li Hui lives and works in Beijing where he studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Just like Barnett Newman’s series of paintings Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue, Li Hui leaves the more traditional artistic ways of expression behind him. Unlike Newman he does not choose for more abstract works. He creates installations in which existing objects, ‘ready-mades’, are placed in a completely new and unexpected context. His sculptural installations have a strong monumental touch, and some of them are for a major part defined by the use of coloured laser lights. Thousands of red and green laser lights will illuminate the museum’s main exhibition hall. But the philosophical and religious background of Li Hui’s works keep in line with Chinese tradition.

Showing the work of this young Chinese artist proceeds from the museum’s ambition to exhibit its own collection as well as works of art by a younger generation of light artists. It wants to provide an international platform for light art and light artists as much as possible. The exhibition Who’s Afraid of Red, Amber and Green is a co-operation with The Ministry of Art in Beijing (www.theministryofart.com)
